The Story of Fred Milne Park
Our Purpose
Fred Milne Park exists to serve the athletes, families, organizations and residents of Sooke.
The Fred Milne Park Society is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and vibrant environment where people of all ages can participate in sport, recreation and community activities.
Our work includes supporting field rentals, maintaining the quality and usability of the facilities, supporting community events and planning for the park's long-term sustainability.
Our goal is simple:
Keep Fred Milne Park safe, accessible and available for future generations of the Sooke community.
Our Story
Fred Milne Park carries the name of a member of one of Sooke's prominent pioneer families. Fred was the youngest son of Edward Milne Jr. and Janet Milne, and the grandson of Edward and Susannah Milne, Scottish immigrants who settled in Sooke in 1884.
The Milne family played an important role in the early development of Sooke. At what became known as Milne's Landing, the family established a farm, general store, post office and wharves serving vessels travelling between Sooke and Victoria. Fred grew up around the family homestead near Sooke River Road and Sooke Road. The homestead was also home to Sooke's early telephone switchboard, and local stories recall the family's flock of resident peacocks — a memorable part of life in early Sooke.
The land that would become Fred Milne Park was later acquired and held by the Sooke Community Association, reflecting the community's long-standing commitment to preserving land for recreation and public use. Over the years, the property evolved into an important community gathering place, supporting local sports, recreation and events.
As the Park's recreational facilities grew, so did the need for dedicated support and stewardship. The Fred Milne Park Society was established to help care for and invest in the Park's fields and facilities, continuing the tradition of community involvement that helped shape the Park.
Today, Fred Milne Park remains a place where generations of Sooke residents come together through sport, recreation and community. The Society is proud to support its continued care, improvement and long-term sustainability for generations to come.
